What is a Flexitank..??

What is a Flexitank..??

Whenever there is a requirement of a certain nature, the market is quick to respond to the same.. This is quite normal and regular in shipping..

Bulk liquid shippers felt the need to be able to use something that is more cost effective than an ISO tank but at the same time fulfilling a requirement similar to that of  an ISO tank..

Enter FLEXITANK which is a bladder or bag that can be fit into a standard ISO container and used for the transport and/or storage of a non-regulated liquid inside a cargo transport unit (container)..

Some of the cargoes that are shipped in Flexitanks are foodstuff, base oils, beer, wine, molasses, glycerine, fruit juices, non-hazardous chemicals, latex, egg products, water, oils, bio-diesel, edible oils, wine, non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, chemicals and industrial products..

Once the tanks are placed inside the 20′ container and filled, it is protected from moving, by placing a bulkhead fixture at the end of the container.. You can click on the below images to see the enlarged version..

This will effectively convert a box container into a tanker.. Flexitanks comes in both top loading and and bottom loading flexitanks..

So far, Flexitanks cannot be used for the transportation of hazardous materials..

Flexitanks are prepared using different types of materials

  • Multilayer polyethylene
  • Single and double layer polyethylene
  • Barrier tanks
  • PVC
  • Bottom discharge
A lot of care however has to be taken with the loading of a flexi-tank – namely,
  • the inside of the container must be free from rust, physical damage, nails, glass, sharp edges
  • the inside must be lined with corrugated paper or cardboard

  1. We are looking for flexi tank for normal diesel transport, any information about three supplier will help

  2. Hi,
are there any flexitanks available for hazardous, liquid goods (class 8, p.g. III)?
    Thanks for letting me know!

    Best regards,

  3. Hi Hariesh,
Is it possible could you please advise if there is any Flexi Tank suppliers in Vancouver?
Please advise the cost of new tanks

  4. Who supplies the flexitank? If we are shipping from a US location to China, does the shipping line provide it with the container, or does the shipper have to buy one and install it themselves?

    • Hi Keith.. There are operators who sell flexi tanks.. Generally shipping lines don’t have these flexis.. Your best bet would be to ask around with all ISO tank and liquid bulk transport operators if they have flexi tanks.. Some of them sell it for you to fit and use and some of them do the fitting for you..

  5. We are looking for a bag in order to transport Oil, extracted from African Palm, from Ecuador to both coasts in US. I wonder if your product can handle this kind of product. We will need some information, particulars, etc
Thanks in advance for your help and attention
