Transnet mitigating measures in response to Coronavirus – COVID-19

PRESS INFORMATION FROM TRANSNET

Dear Valued Customer,

covid19As a custodian of rail, ports and terminals, Transnet SOC Limited has set up a Command Centre to closely monitor and engage with our customers on the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on their supply chains and the services provided by Transnet.

With the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on people and economies worldwide, it is important that we work together to ensure that we all remain informed, share plans and tactics and respond with agility in an integrated fashion.

Measures implemented by Transnet

  1. A Transnet Command Centre has been created which will serve as a central focus and provide direction on all coronavirus-related matters.
  2. An embargo has been placed on both domestic and international work-related travel.
  3. The Transnet Health & Wellness team has issued various staff communiques to raise the level of awareness and ensure proper education of employees
  4. Business Continuity Plans are being reviewed and updated on an on-going basis as emerging risks are identified and new information becomes available.

Impact on Ports

One of the measures announced by the President is the closure of two sea-ports in South Africa. This closure refers ONLY to passenger vessels and crew changes. There will be no crew changes at any South African ports.

The commercial vessel operations will continue to function across all sea-ports. Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) will only work a vessel once it has been screened by Port Health and health clearance granted by Port Health and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). Under no circumstances will TPT work a vessel without clearance.

All procedures involving screening at the ports are done through the Ports Health officials in collaboration with the Department of Health (DoH) and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) to monitor the outbreak.

Every effort is being made to ensure the protection of our customers, stakeholders and employees. We are looking forward to your support during this challenging time.

Kind Regards

Gert De Beer
