Remarkable Sustainability and Efficiency milestones for PSA Mumbai in 2023

2023 has been a groundbreaking year for PSA Mumbai container terminal, situated in Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) in Maharashtra, India.

PSA Mumbai has not only surpassed the 2 million TEU mark in 2023 but also achieved the status of India’s first 100% renewable energy-powered container terminal.

These milestones reflect the terminal’s unwavering commitment to excellence, sustainability, and innovation making it a major success story in the Indian logistics sector, combining efficient operations with a strong focus on environmental responsibility.

PSA Mumbai’s Remarkable Growth

With a staggering 30% year-over-year growth, PSA Mumbai joined an elite club of container terminal models in 2023 after handling 2 million TEU in a single year,” says Mr. Vincent Ng, PSA’s Regional CEO of Middle East and South Asia.

The success of PSA Mumbai serves as an example of what can be accomplished when the public and private sectors work together effectively and constructively,” added Ng.

This achievement showcases the terminal’s strategic location and world-class facilities that enable it to excel in container handling. With over 2,000 container rakes and 834 ships docked PSA Mumbai has emerged as a significant player in India’s logistics landscape.

Innovation and Sustainability

This achievement is a testament to our relentless pursuit of operational excellence and the trust placed in us by partners and customers” affirms Gobu Selliaya, CEO PSA India.

While thanking the JNPA officials, Andy Lane, CEO of PSA Mumbai said “In our effort to “Accelerate India”, we strive to offer cutting-edge digital products with exceptional efficiency. To meet those efficiency targets, we are investing in technology and training.

The terminal has invested significantly in cutting-edge equipment, digital systems, and training to enhance efficiency and productivity. Moreover, it has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint through eco-friendly practices like electrifying gantry cranes and utilizing renewable energy sources.

Strategic Connectivity

The terminal’s strategic connectivity through major highways, rail networks, and a dedicated rail freight corridor has facilitated efficient transportation to key markets in India, establishing it as the country’s largest and premier container gateway.

As PSA Mumbai continues to expand and innovate, Phase 2 is set to become operational by the first quarter of 2025. This expansion will solidify its position as India’s largest standalone container terminal, offering new opportunities for the Export-Import (EXIM) community to support the growth of the Indian logistics sector.

Solar Power Initiative and Emissions Reduction

PSA Mumbai has achieved a major milestone in its emissions reduction journey by
becoming India’s first 100% renewable powered container terminal on the commissioning
of its 7.8MW solar farm with O2 Power with plans to expand it to 10 MW by June 2024.

“We are delighted to commission our solar farm and with the switch to 100% renewable power, achieve a significant reduction in our emissions. Supply chain users want greener and more sustainable transportation solutions to achieve emissions reduction targets: the successful completion of this initiative and projects such as the soon-to-be-delivered e-trucks underscores our commitment to meeting those requirements,” said Lane.

This aligns with PSA Mumbai’s goal to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

PSA Mumbai is also electrifying its equipment fleet, including deploying an all-electric Rubber-tyred Gantry Crane (RTGC) fleet for Phase 2 development and electrification of existing RTGCs in Phase 1 is underway, set to be completed by 2027.

The upcoming launch of e-trucks by PSA BDP in early 2024 will create a zero-emission green transport corridor in Nhava Sheva further emphasizing PSA’s commitment to green transportation initiatives.

Conclusion

PSA Mumbai’s exceptional performance in 2023, surpassing the 2 million TEU mark, and becoming India’s first 100% renewable energy-powered container terminal are monumental achievements.

These milestones exemplify the terminal’s dedication to operational excellence, sustainability, and innovation. As PSA Mumbai continues to evolve and expand, it remains poised to meet the evolving needs of the Indian logistics sector while contributing to the nation’s economic development.
