Experts from South Africa, Taiwan & UK logistics industry added to TT Club’s board

TT Club, the specialist liability insurance provider for the international freight and logistics industry, has appointed three new Members to its controlling Board. These new appointments are drawn from its insured organization membership, reflecting the industry’s diversity and expertise.

New Appointments Reflect Industry Diversity

The Through Transport Mutual Insurance Association Limited (Bermuda), abbreviated as TTB, operates as a mutual organization. Its Board comprises representatives from the organizations it insures, ensuring that those making decisions are intimately familiar with the challenges and opportunities within the freight, logistics, cargo handling, and intermodal container operations sectors.

This week, TTB’s meeting in Rome marked the announcement of three new non-executive Board Members, each bringing a wealth of experience from different corners of the globe:

  1. Nosiphesihle Mbongwa from Durban, South Africa, joins the Board effective June 20th. With over 20 years in the freight industry, Mbongwa has held significant roles including CFO of Bidvest Freight and Commercial Director within the group. Her comprehensive background spans distribution operations and container terminal management.
  2. Wendy Chien, appointed in March this year, serves as Managing Director of Contract Logistics at Dimerco Express Group in Taipei, Taiwan. Chien’s expertise lies in managing comprehensive logistics, warehousing, and distribution operations across the Asia-Pacific region, employing a range of multi-modal transport options.
  3. Frans Caljé, the CEO of PD Ports based in Teesside, UK, also joins the Board effective June 20th. Caljé manages one of the largest ports in the United Kingdom, renowned for its port-centric logistics solutions. His extensive experience includes roles as MD of Unitised & Port Centric Logistics at PD Ports and positions at container terminal operator APM.

A Commitment to Diversity and Strategic Direction

Emphasizing the importance of these appointments, Charles Fenton, TT’s CEO, said “Our Board of Directors represents those organisations that we insure. They characterise every type of operator among our membership and come from every region of the world. Indeed, our structure means that every Member can input into the key decisions we make about the types of risk we underwrite and our strategic direction.

Fenton highlighted the role of the Nominations Committee in fostering diversity saying “Appointments to the Board are recommended to the membership, who have voting rights, by the Nominations Committee, which seeks to increase gender and ethnic diversity in the Board, mirroring as closely as possible the underlying membership of TT Club. I’m pleased that our commitment to this diversity continues to be represented in TT’s governance.

The Role of a Mutual Organization

As a mutual organization, TT Club prioritizes the needs of its Members over profit generation. Surplus funds are reinvested into reserves that support ongoing risk management and loss prevention initiatives. This approach includes significant investment in research to anticipate and address future industry challenges, guided by the insights and oversight of the elected Board of Member Directors.
